I first have to give a shout out to my amazing parents, Shawn and Dawn. I owe a lot of my success today to all that they did for me and my 3 younger brothers growing up, how they continue to selflessly serve us, and the values that they instilled in us.
I grew up in a small town in upstate NY where my graduating class size was only 53 kids. I was too competitive for my own good and played sports year-round.
I began researching colleges and future career paths as early as 9th grade but, despite all my research into careers, nothing stood out as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life even by the time senior year of high school came around. I ended up deciding to go to SUNY Oswego and to major in software engineering there, simply because I figured there would be good job security and a high-income potential for that field since it was in tech.
At Oswego, I met some great people and decided to pledge a fraternity there my freshman year. The first couple of years were perfect – no real responsibility, constant parties, and great friends. But going into my junior year, I realized that I was already halfway to graduation and I had learned absolutely nothing so far – except for how to chug a beer. I still didn’t know what kind of career I wanted to have as my original plan of software engineering definitely was not for me, and I couldn’t think of any job that I would want to spend the rest of my life doing even after changing my major a few times.
I started to really have a change of heart. I began contemplating my passions, my strengths and weaknesses, who I was, and why it was even considered normal for someone to spend the best years of their life working every single day. It was during this time of reflection that I had a fortunate twist of fate.
In November of 2017 I was introduced to some successful entrepreneurs, some who were even able to develop assets large enough to be able to walk away from their jobs in their 20’s and 30’s. Long story short, I really pursued them because the thought of me having to work every single day for the rest of my life and just living for the weekends freaked me out – especially since I had already spent years trying to figure out what I wanted to do and still had no idea. I ended up qualifying for their time and they have been mentoring me and teaching me how to develop assets that model theirs on the side of my career ever since.
I still stayed in school after earning their mentorship though, so I could get that piece of paper that says I learned something. And with my piece of paper that says I learned something, I got a job in project management at an investment bank. Which is great because my piece of paper says that I learned about information science. I never took any classes in anything related to investment banking. But, it’s all good. College was a good time.
After working in investment banking for several months, I accepted a position working in project management for a digital advertising company instead. So currently, I live in NYC and work full-time in project management for a digital advertising company. On the side of my full-time position, I also work closely with the entrepreneurs mentioned above so that I won’t have to keep trading my time for a paycheck every week for the rest of my life and instead will be able to spend more time with my family, giving back, traveling the world, and pursuing my passions.
Through the guidance of my mentors, the books I’ve read, and the association I’ve developed, my life has been impacted in such a positive way. By implementing what I have learned and what I continue to learn every day, my plans have grown to new heights that I would’ve never imagined were even possible before. One of my goals is to also now be able to use some of what I’ve learned to pay it forward and make a positive impact in the lives of others. If I can do it, you definitely can too.
